4th of July
4 juli is de 'geboortedag' van Amerika. Independence Day, beter bekend als The fourth of July wordt in Boston groots gevierd en gaat gepaard met een concert en vuurwerk. http://www.july4th.org/
Wij zijn de middag begonnen op het dakterras van Vanessa en Tom, samen met Dico en Mirella. Heerlijk in het zonnetje met wijn, kaas, olijven, pastasalade en watermeloen.
Boston Pops Orchestra http://www.bostonpops.org/ verzorgde die avond een concert van 20:30 tot 22:30 en daarna volgde een half uur vuurwerk onder begeleiding van muziek. Normaal gesproken is het concert en vuurwerk veel eerder op de avond zodat gezinnen er heen kunnen. Maar omdat de organisatie haar televisierechten heeft verkocht aan een nationaal televisiestation, is de hele boel naar de late avond geschoven om hun inkomsten te vergroten. Nu konden mensen aan de andere kant van het land, met 4 uur tijdverschil, het hele spektakel (inclusief reclames) ook 's avonds bekijken op TV. Ik heb mij hier vreselijk over opgewonden. Het concert wordt zelfs onderbroken om ruimte te maken voor de reclames op televisie. Toppunt van commercie en typisch Amerikaans. Je voelt je als publiek meer een onderdeel van een televisie-show dan van een concert dat toevallig op televisie wordt uitgezonden. Omdat ik het concert vond tegenvallen qua muziek (veel Amerikaans patriotistische deuntjes, en wat gehoempapa) zijn we eerder weggegaan. Wel jammer vond ik dat ik het vuurwerk hierdoor niet heb kunnen zien. Dat schijnt heel spectaculair te zijn geweest.
Al met al een super relaxed weekend waarin we veel gedaan hebben en wat bijgebruind zijn.
We spent 4th of July on the roof deck of Vanessa and Tom, together with Dico and Mirella. We enjoyed wine, cheese, olives and a pasta salad. After that, we went down-town to see the Boston Pops and the fireworks.
Since CBS broadcasts the concert/fireworks and makes a lot of money doing that, the whole concert is arranged to satisfy their cash flow. The music did not start untill 8.30 and the fireworks ended at 11.00. This to give people on the West Coast a chance to watch things on TV. The schedule was too late for many families and hard-working adults, who live in Boston. On top of that: the concert itself did not live up to my expectations: it was a strange collection of ladida, sing-a-long music and some country & western. During the commercial brakes (on tv) the Orchestra played some fast-paced tunes that fit into the 2-3 minutes breaks. As audience you felt part of a tv-show instead of the audience of a concert/fireworks that also happened to be broadcasted on tv. I am frustrated that I missed the fire-works (one of my favorite spectacles) but the show was not worth-while staying for in my opinion. I guess I do not like America enough yet, to see through the commercial breaks.
