Familiebezoek / Family Visit
Mijn nicht(je) Margot en haar vriendin Hanneke zijn in New York langskomen. Ze hadden een druk programma: eerst een weekje in New York en dan de oostkust af met een huurauto. Het was echt heel leuk om haar weer te zien, en ook een beetje raar omdat het alweer enkele jaren geleden is dat we elkaar voor het laatst zagen. En dan geef je elkaar ineens weer drie zoenen midden op Times Square in New York. Bizar!
Ze logeerden in een hotel in de stad. Ik voelde me daar eerst best schuldig over, maar ons apartmentje is gewoon net te klein voor langblijvend bezoek. Joe werkt veel van huis uit en ik ben nog steeds druk op zoek naar een baan, vanuit hetzelfde huisje. Gelukkig begrepen Marg en haar vriendin het helemaal en vonden ze het geen probleem om in een hotelletje te verblijven. Zo hoefden ze ook niet tegelijkertijd met ons om 7:30 op te staan tijdens hun vakantie.
We zijn naar een leuke zingende diner geweest, waar de obers tussen het serveren door liedjes ten gehore brengen. Erg vrolijk. Hanneke heeft 2 jaar geleden 3 maanden stage gelopen bij Max Westerman en heeft al die tijd contact onderhouden met haar oude stageplek. De nieuwe stagiair vond het geen probleem om ons een rondleiding te geven. De Nederlandse journalisten hebben een kantoor bij CBS, een grote Amerikaanse nieuwszender. We hebben in de studio gespiekt en zijn ook nog naar het dak geweest waar Max Westerman altijd stond om Nederland van het wel en wee in Amerika op de hoogte te houden. Het regende jammergenoeg maar misschien dat het uitzicht jullie bekend voorkomt....
Margot had van haar collega's in het hotel een fax gekregen met allerlei cadeau verzoekjes die ze mee moest nemen vanuit New York. Op de lijst stonden onder andere:
- Een lekkere neger uit de Bronx
- Een eekhoorn uit Central Park
- Een paar Manola Blahnik schoenen en Gucci laarzen (niet uit de uirverkoop, maar het nieuwe seizoen)
- Cheesecake van de Cheesecake Factory
- Handtekening van Woody Allen
Toen de meiden bij Joe en mij kwamen eten, hebben we daarvoor gezorgd en een foto naar ze opgestuurd. De eekhoorn is het bontje om Margot's nek. Er zit een stikker op met de tekst "Squirrel is Dood".
Ik ben goed verwend door de twee: een Kitch Kitchen boodschappen tas en een DVD van Max in the City. Erg leuk. Ik heb de tas al veel gebruikt en krijg leuke complimentjes op straat.
Het volgende familiebezoek staat in December gepland. Begin december komen namelijk mijn zusje en haar vriend en met kerst mijn ouders. IK KAN NIET WACHTEN om hen weer te zien.
My younger cousin Margot and her girlfriend Hanneke came to visit me in New York. They had a busy program: first a week in New York and then drive along the East Coast in a rental car. It was strange, but really nice to see her again. We have not seen each other in a few years, and then all of a sudden you give each other 3 Dutch kisses in the middle of Times Square, New York City. Bizar!
The two girls stayed in a hotel in Manhattan. I felt a bit guilty about that at first, but our apartmentje is just too small for 2 guests, one Joe who often works from home and myself looking for work out of the same apartment. 1 or 2 nights in the weekend is fine, but more than that, especially during working weeks, disrupts your whole life. Fortunately they understood completely and the hotel allowed them to sleep in and not get up with Joe and me at 7:30 AM.
We did some fun stuff: we started out by going to the singing diner, which was hilarious. All the waiters perform sing a long songs. Kitsch but good Kitsch. Then to, into and on the CBS tower. A few years ago, Hanneke, Margot's friend, did an internship with one of the Dutch News Channels, who are affiliated with CBS. She had arranged a tour around the CBS building which was impressive. We swear that we almost bumped into Katie Couric in the elevator. She went up when we went down. We are convinced of that! Despite the rain, we went up to the roof deck where most Dutch news broadcasts are taped. We stood where normally the Dutch news anker stands and pretended to report on today's happenings in New York City.
Back at the hotel, Margot received a fax from her colleagues with all kinds of gift requests. On the list they mentioned, among other things:
- A handsome rapper from the Bronx
- A squirrel from Central park
- A pair of Manola Blahnik shoes and Gucci boots (no sales, but the new season)
- Cheesecake of the Cheesecake Factory
- and a signature of Woody Allen
When the girls came over to have dinner at our place, we collected most items by digging through my wardrobe and refrigerator. The fur around Margot's neck is the squirrel. We put a sticker on it that read: "Squirrel is DEAD".
They really spoiled me with many goodies from The Netherlands, candy, a DVD with a documentary on New York City and an colorfull Kitsch Kitchen oilcloth bag. Very funky and hip. A lot of people have complimented me on the bag already, when grocery shopping
The next family visit is due in December. First of December Meike, my sister, and her boyfriend Geert are coming for 4 days. Then for Christmas I get the best present ever: my parents. They are coming for 8 days. By that time I have not seen them for a whole year. I CANNOT WAIT to see them again. I miss them tremendously, especially since I used to seem them twice a month when I lived in The Netherlands. Once a year, is not enough. I am already making a list of all the things I want to do with them. Hopefully I don't have to wait another year after that to see them again.

We hebben de foto's gezien van Margot en jou. Heel leuk. Ik wist niet dat ik nog zulke lieve kleinkinderen heb. Met Roos is alles goed en met mij ook.
